Among the people who lost their lives in the
tsunami, almost 50 percent were children. Similarly, almost
40 percent of the 100,000 displaced were children. Over 4,000
children lost immediate family members.
In the aftermath of the tsunami, Sarvodaya received requests from hundreds of
school principals and foster parents seeking financial and other
support to send these children to school and help them return to a
normal home life. Sarvodaya Suwasetha Sewa
identified 200 tsunami affected children for immediate
rehabilitation and long term support. But Suwasetha has only been
able to generate support for about 60 children at this point.
The program provides monthly allowances and
other support for the children and their foster parents. A
portion of the contribution is saved in a savings account in the child's
name. This fund cannot be withdrawn until the child reaches the
age of 18. Suwasetha hopes that this fund will be used towards
further training to enhance other opportunities in their lives.
