Hasanthi and her family were going on a pilgrimage when they were caught up in the tsunami. Miraculously, she survived. She was found hung onto a branch of a tree. Her mother and a younger brother perished. While Hasanthi lives with nightmares, her father is yet to recover from trauma. He has developed serious psychological problems.

Now, Hasanthi lives with her Aunt, a clerk at the local government office. Sarvodaya Suwasetha supports her with a monthly scholarship. The scholarship allows Hasanthi to attend school.
