Professor Patrick Mendis, esteemed advisor for
Sarvodaya USA, recently published a collection of essays entitled
Glocalization: The
Human Side of Globalization as if the Washington Consensus Mattered.
The essays are original analyzes and first-hand observations of
global forces operating in the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, and
Asia.
With a historical framework of
globalization and freedom, the author, who taught at the University
of Pittsburgh's Semester at Sea Program, critically explores the
influence of U.S. foreign policies and American values that has
affected these countries where freedom prevails. Dr. Mendis includes
an intriguing interview with Fidel Castro on his worldview on
freedom, human security, and the unique process of glocalization
taking place in Cuba today. Imparting the human side for our
understanding of global processes, this collection of essays is
insightful and relevant in our time of globalization.
A portion of proceeds of the book will go
to the Sarvodaya Movement in Sri Lanka. Dr. Mendis has already
established a number of tsunami Leader-2-Leader scholarships in Sri
Lanka and a Peace Prize for Compassionate Minds at the Sarvodaya
International Peace Centre (see
the Ceylon Daily News article). |
