These jewelries are made by teen-age
mothers residing at Ma-Sevana, a
residential care facility of Sarvodaya Suwasetha.
With the support of Emerge,
a project of young MIT student, these jewelries provide direct
income, autonomy, and empowerment to the girls.
Ma-Sevana provides care for teenage
mothers who are victims of sexual abuse and rape. Most of the time
these young girls are victimized by their immediate family members.
Ma-Sevana houses girls as young as 12 years of age and their babies,
offering residential care and protection. These young mothers are
given trauma counseling and meditation courses by professional
counselors. They are empowered by giving vocational skill training
in dress making, handicrafts, bakery, gardening and cookery as well
as non-formal education.
