Rebuilding Haiti
On January 12, 2010, an earthquake struck Haiti and devastated several towns and communities, included the capital city, Port-au-Prince. Over 150,000 were killed, a million displaced.
Even before the earthquake, Haiti wa considered one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. Most Haitians live on $2 or less per day. And, about 80% of the population were estimated to be living in poverty.
It has also remained one of the violent countries throughout its history.
The Centre Caraïbéen pour la Non-Violence Globale et le Développement Durable (CCNGD) is a Haitian nonprofit fostering nonviolence, and sustainable development through research, training and action orientated projects since 2004. Through a series of initiatives, it has emphasized the positive aspects in Hati’s history and culture, building creative nonviolent alternatives.
