Rebuilding Haiti

Earthquaked in January 2010 killed over 150,000 people and destroyed infrastructure.

On January 12, 2010, an earthquake struck Haiti and devastated several towns and communities, included the capital city, Port-au-Prince. Over 150,000 were killed, a million displaced.

Even before the earthquake, Haiti wa considered one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. Most Haitians live on $2 or less per day. And, about 80% of the population were estimated to be living in poverty.

It has also remained one of the violent countries throughout its history.

The Centre Caraïbéen pour la Non-Violence Globale et le Développement Durable (CCNGD) is a Haitian nonprofit fostering nonviolence, and sustainable development through research, training and action orientated projects since 2004. Through a series of initiatives, it has emphasized the positive aspects in Hati’s history and culture, building creative nonviolent alternatives.
