Calls on All Sri Lankans to Light an Oil Lamp and Show Your
Individual Pledge to Peace on the Island
The Ceasefire Agreement (CFA) signed between the Government of Sri
Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in 2002 marked
an important turning point in the recent history of our island. From
the day of its signing to the present moment, people have debated on
the clauses of the document, but what must be recognized is the
spirit in which it was signed.

Whatever the agreement might or might
not have, it has always represented hope and an inherent
belief that we as Sri Lankans can get past the years of war
that this nation has suffered and step into a new era of
peace and prosperity.
The CFA has saved hundreds if not thousands of lives and
limbs of this nation’s young people, which might have been
lost if the war had continued unabated. It has ensured that
lives that had come to a standstill were able to be
restarted. The agreement has enabled the people of this
island to live without fear of where the next bomb or battle
or death might take place. This is what the common people of
Sri Lanka have received from the CFA and this is why it is
imperative that we as a nation express our support of it. |
Sarvodaya invites all Sri Lankans to
join the movement in a day of celebration and commemoration
of the signing of the CFA. The organization requests the
people of this island to express their commitment to the
agreement by lighting an oil lamp on 22nd February at
six in the morning and keeping it alight till six that
evening. You may do this at your home, work place, school or
at a place of religious worship. By dedicating yourself to
regularly refill the lamp and keep up a continuous flame of
hope for twelve hours, you will show your solidarity to this
important agreement and your individual pledge to peace in
this nation. By joining hands on this day in this simple
ceremony of harmony, the people of Sri Lanka will reiterate
their commitment to peace and their solidarity with each
other.
