Buck For A Buck – A Campaign To Complete Jyotidaya School

Christmas brought an amazing gift to us, especially to 286 children at Jyotidaya Cooperative School in Nepal, who will see a fully functional library in a few months.

On Christmas eve and day before 60 Bridgewater College (11th and 12th grade) students in Kathmandu sat with shoe polish and brushes – full on their college dress – at various Malls in the city. Their campaigned titled, “Let us shine your shoes to shine a school library,’ raised Rs. 70,000 (almost USD $1,000) in two days. In a majority hindu country where caste system still defines one’s profession and where shoemakers are traditionally untouchables, this act of courage and generosity defines a paradigm shift in new generation of urban youth. In many ways, this also is the power of the mission of Sarvodaya, which champions of the world that works for all and encourage humility, compassion and generosity.

This act of generosity will remain unfulfilled if we fail to complete the construction of a new school building that we began early this year. Thus, we are announcing a three months long campaign called “Buck for a Buck” to complete the construction.

To support our campaign, 300 school students at Jyotidaya School and Ullens School in Kathmandu between Grade 5 and 10 have committed to save at least a Rupee a day until the end of March. On December 23 all these children came together to make their own piggy bank from recyclable materials such as old boxes, thrown bottles, and cans.

Match a child's saving

You can now browse through these wonderful piggy banks and commit to match a child’s saving. We encourage you to ‘adopt’ a child’s saving.

Our goal is to find at least 300 individuals who are willing to match a child and raise minimum of USD $30,000 by March 2012.

Please visit our campaign website, www.ilike2give.org select a child and commit to match child’s saving.

Make sure to leave your email address, the child you have committed to match will write you a thank you note.

We appreciate your generosity this holiday season.
