Besides engaging in
immediate relief activities, Sarvodaya is turning the colossal
natural disaster into an opportunity to rebuild a new Sri Lankan
society torn apart by years of ethnic war, poverty and
suffering. Thus, Sarvodaya adopted a comprehensive 5R – for
Relief, Rehabilitation, Reconstruction, Reconciliation, and
Reawakening – program that goes “beyond relief” to create
sustainable livelihood for the millions people in need.
In the true spirit of
American volunteerism and Sarvodaya’s self-help grassroots
philosophies, Sarvodaya USA (SUSA) operated with hundreds of
volunteers and a small core staff to support communities
devastated by tsunami. In less than six months since the tsunami
struck, Sarvodaya USA (SUSA) helped raised more than $3 and half
million. We support Sarvodaya's priorities in 12 core areas.
They include:
1. Women, children and orphans
2. Water and sanitation
3. Health and preventive Care Management
4. Psychological and spiritual healing
5. Housing and resettlement
6. Camp/Community Management and governance
7. Livelihood support, trade and micro-finance
8. Environmental management and ecology
9. Disaster management and mitigation
10. Communication
11. Documentation and Legal Assistance
12. Integrated village awakening |
