Wasana
Age: 12
Education: 7th grade
Goal: To become a doctor

Wasana lost both of her parents, an elder sister and younger brother to the tsunami. They were walking along Galle road to catch a bus, when the tsunami swept away the entire family. Two other relatives were also caught in the waves.

Wasana and her elder brother now live with their grandmother. Grandmother, age 70, is fragile and osteoporosis makes it difficult for her to work.

Before the tsunami, it was Wasana's father whose income sustained the entire family. Now, paying bills is a challenge. A generous donor, from Colombo, helped rebuild the house. But, it's a challenge finding enough money to survive. Life would be more difficult were it not for Sarvodaya Suwasetha's support. With Sarvodaya USA's financial support, Wasana receives a monthly stipend of $15. Often, that is the only money they see these days. Suwasetha volunteers and staff, trained in community based rehabilitation visit Wasana and her family every month. They share joy and sorrow and try to help the family in every way possible.

Memory remains: family portrait

Wasana's grandmother worries about sustaining the livelihood of her family.

It only costs about $25 a month or $300 a year to support a child - tsunami survivor- and to provide longer term security with savings.
